Experience

Bala Dharan, Vice President, is a member of CRA’s Financial Accounting and Valuation Practice. He has extensive consulting experience in financial reporting, corporate finance, financial markets, and business valuation. He has been admitted as an expert in accounting and finance litigation matters, and he has testified in court on financial accounting and disclosures, transactions analysis, damages, and valuation issues. Recent litigation and business consulting examples include financial analysis of structured financing transactions and derivatives, analysis of collateralized debt obligations and credit default swaps disclosures, fair value accounting and its impact on financial statements, analysis of internal controls for risk measurement, disclosures of oil and gas valuation reserves and energy derivatives, stock market’s use of accounting disclosures, and calculation of damages.

Dr. Dharan has published widely in major US and international accounting and finance journals, and he is the co-author of three textbooks on financial accounting and finance topics. He has been invited three times by the United States Congress to testify on financial reporting, structured finance, and accounting standards. Dr. Dharan is on leave from the business school faculty at Rice University, Houston, where he has served since 1982. He was previously on the faculty at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and he has been a visiting professor at the Harvard Business School and at University of California, Berkeley. He is currently a visiting professor at the Harvard Law School for 2008 to 2009. Dr. Dharan is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, American Accounting Association, American Finance Association, and the CFA Institute.
