Academic publishing merger authorised in Phase I by the European Commission

The European Commission has cleared the merger of BertelsmannSpringer with Kluwer Academic Publishers (KAP). Both parties are active in the academic publishing sector, and in particular in STM (Science, Technology and Medical) publishing. During the Commission's merger control assessment of the transaction, we provided economic advice to Cinven and Candover (the owners of KAP and purchasers of BertelsmannSpringer) on market definition and issues related to the competitive assessment of the transaction. The Commission cleared the merger after an initial (Phase I) investigation, subject only to minor divestments. See Press Release and European Commission Decision
