BAT's acquisition of ETI (Ente Tabacchi Italiano) from the Italian government, concluding the privatisation process of the latter's tobacco business, was notified last September to the European Commission and subsequently referred back to the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM). The purchase has been cleared following a Phase II investigation. We assisted BAT with empirical and theoretical analyses on issues such as market definition, unilateral effects and coordinated effects in the Italian market for cigarettes.
