We supported Sun Microsystems, a major complainant against Microsoft, with economic analysis through the EU investigation which led to the landmark infringement decision. Microsoft was fined half a billion Euros for abuse of its dominant position and abusive practices in the server and media player markets. Bill Bishop made an economic presentation at the Oral Hearing held in November 2003. Our contributions covered a number of areas, including econometric studies of market definition in the server market and the analysis of incentives to limit interoperability in order to raise rivals' costs. We also worked for another interested party on the economics of bundling, with reference to the media player market.
