UK Competition Commission clears Pan Fish/Marine Harvest merger unconditionally

The UK Competition Commission (CC) has cleared the merger of Pan Fish and Marine Harvest without conditions. The merger, involving two firms active in the supply of farmed Atlantic salmon, was referred to the CC on 6 July 2006. CRA International's London and Brussels offices provided economic advice to the merging parties throughout the CC investigation and during the parallel investigation by the French competition authorities. The merging parties submitted econometric analyses supporting the view that Norwegian and Scottish farmed salmon formed part of the same relevant market, and a merger simulation model which indicated that the merger would not lead to a significant lessening of competition. The CRA team comprised Cristina Caffarra, Diana Jackson, Penelope Papandropoulos, Valter Sorana, Hugh Wills, Daniel Donath and Rameet Sangha. The merger has been approved in all other relevant jurisdictions and was authorised by the DGCCRF in France on 1 December 2006 subject to divestments in Scotland.
