South African Competition Tribunal approves Netcare's acquisition of Community Hospital Group

The South African Competition Tribunal announced on 2 August 2007 that it had approved the merger of Netcare and Community Hospital Group (CHG). Netcare is one of the three major private hospital groups in South Africa. CHG is a small chain with hospitals in the Gauteng and Western Cape provinces. The Competition Commission had recommended prohibition of the proposed merger, primarily on the grounds that the merger allegedly would reduce competition among hospitals to become part of networks organized by healthcare funders. Dr Robert Stillman of CRA International, supported by Elina Koustoumpardi and Adrien Cervera-Jackson, testifed for the merging parties. The Tribunal's reasons for its decision have not yet been released.
