On 9 August 2010 the European Commission approved Novartis' proposed acquisition of a majority interest in Alcon, subject to conditions, following a Phase I investigation.
Novartis and Alcon are global pharmaceutical companies, both of which are active in ocular pharmaceuticals and consumer eye care products, as well as other areas. The Commission's investigation considered a large number of markets for various ocular pharmaceutical and consumer eye care products in different member states across the EEA. A team from CRA's European Competition Practice including Matthias Pflanz, Rameet Sangha, Hristina Dantcheva and Gareth Shier assisted Novartis with obtaining Phase I clearance.
See the Commission's press release for further details.
