Geoff is a specialist in the economics of competition and regulation, with particular expertise advising in the media and communications sectors. He has provided expert economic advice in the context of market investigations, merger reviews, allegations of anticompetitive behaviour and regulatory proceedings before the European Commission and national competition and regulatory authorities. His clients include major players in the media, communications, pharmaceutical, and banking sectors. Dr. Edwards' most recent experience includes the following:
- Advising on a contemplated merger of two of the four leading retail banks in a European country.
- Advice on a number of contemplated transactions in the media and communications sectors (including a proposed transaction between a major European media company and an incumbent telecoms operator).
- A report for an incumbent postal service operator on the extent of competition in its markets and the merits of an application for exemption from the Commission's procurement directives.
- Advice to Reuters in the context of the European Commission's investigation of its acquisition by Thomson Financial; the transaction was cleared by the Commission with conditions in early 2008 following a Phase II investigation.
- A review for a European incumbent telephony operator of the necessity for regulation of the wholesale broadband access (WBA) market and margin squeeze modelling of its WBA offers.
- Advice to a leading pharmaceutical company on the competition effects of responses to pharmaceutical parallel trade between European countries.
- Assisting a major UK retail bank in its responses to the UK Competition Commission's investigation of personal current account banking in Northern Ireland.
