Dr. Gopal Das Varma  is an industrial organization economist with more than 20 years of experience in academia, government, and private sector economic consulting. He currently serves as a Vice-President with the Competition Practice of CRA Charles River Associates.  In that role, he provides expert advice to clients on mergers and acquisitions, and serves as an expert witness in anti-trust litigations.

From 2012 to 2016, Dr. Das Varma served as an economist in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”) where he was responsible for investigating the competitive effects of mergers and potentially anti-competitive practices. His work at the DOJ spanned a wide range of industries including healthcare, cable, broadband internet, wireless communications, consumer electronics, agricultural products, airlines and industrial commodities.  Dr. Das Varma’s work was profiled in the Antitrust Division’s Spring 2015 Update (available at: https://www.justice.gov/atr/division-update/2015/spotlight-division-economists).  

Prior to joining the DOJ, Dr. Das Varma served as an economist at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, as a Principal with the Competition Practice at CRA, and as a tenure-track faculty member at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, where he taught graduate level courses in Economics and Management. Dr. Das Varma is frequently invited to speak at conferences and his writings appear in prominent publications.
