Intellectual Property Practice

Practice overview

In our Intellectual Property Practice, we apply our deep expertise in finance, accounting and economics to all types of IP issues, whether in the context of high-stakes disputes, transactions, valuations or compliance matters. In the dispute context, CRA is hired to quantify and provide independent, expert testimony on damages in patent, trademark, trade secret and copyright infringement matters. CRA is also hired to perform valuations of IP for the purpose of mergers and acquisitions, licensing negotiations, tax reasons, or to evaluate strategic business decisions as they relate to a client’s intellectual property holdings.

What do we look for in candidates?

Full Time and Interns – We seek candidates who will be graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Economics. We place high value on knowledge of financial and economic concepts, exceptional written and oral communication skills, a high level of initiative and responsibility, dedication to quality, a strong work ethic, creativity, and a positive attitude. Applicants with a strong fluency in Microsoft Excel are preferred. For interns, we seek rising juniors with a similar profile.

Role of interns and junior staff

Our junior staff and interns will assist in the estimation of financial damages to support expert testimony on economic harm in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret disputes. While working in the IP group, staff will conduct industry research and create complex financial models to determine profits lost and/or royalties due as the result of the infringement of intellectual property. Junior staff and interns may also analyze and value patent portfolios and novel technologies in connection with merger and acquisition transactions or license negotiations. Outside of client-facing work, junior staff and interns have the opportunity to contribute to business development, thought leadership, and other practice initiatives.
