Forensic investigation of software license piracy leading to $27M judgment

Client issue: A leading computer chip software design and testing company discovered that a competitor was engaging in unauthorized and pirated use of its licensed software tools.
CRA approach: CRA was retained by counsel to investigate the alleged software piracy. The team collected forensic images from multiple on-site servers at the competitor’s offices and analyzed digital artifacts for evidence of unlicensed use. A specialist was deployed to Vietnam to gather additional digital evidence and assist in identifying the individual responsible for the misconduct.
Client impact: The forensic investigation enabled the client to pursue legal action against both the individual and the competitor. The case concluded with a summary judgment awarding over $27 million in damages to the client.
