Investigated unauthorized access in church data matter

Challenge:

Our client engaged CRA Forensic Services experts after their internal IT team detected an employee accessing sensitive files and data on his church-issued computer without proper authorization. Recognizing the potential sensitivity and scope of the matter, we were retained promptly to provide a thorough forensic examination.

CRA approach:

Our team forensically imaged and analyzed multiple computers the employee had accessed, applying proven investigative methodologies to determine the extent of unauthorized activity. The examination uncovered a timeline of access stretching back several months prior to the initial incident, revealing the employee had viewed a significant volume of files and sensitive data beyond his authorized permissions. Our investigation ruled out the possibility that the files were transferred outside of the church’s IT network, thus limiting the exposure to reputational and economic harm as a result of unauthorized access.

Our experts identified the precise methods the employee used to bypass established data protections and implemented safeguards, providing clear insights into vulnerabilities within the organization’s IT infrastructure. A comprehensive report was delivered to the client detailing the files accessed, the techniques employed, and actionable recommendations to strengthen security and mitigate recurrence.

Client impact:

Throughout the engagement, our experts demonstrated responsiveness and decisiveness, enabling the client to receive timely updates and clear, actionable findings. The investigation leveraged the full expertise of our team, facilitating both depth of technical analysis and strategic guidance aligned with the client’s operational and reputational priorities. Our approach balanced rigorous attention to detail with commercial awareness, confirming that recommendations were practical, cost-effective, and directly supportive of the church’s long-term data security and organizational success.
