CRA was retained by two creditors of Nortel to help assess the potential auction price in bankruptcy for Nortel’s patents related to the emerging LTE standard. CRA coordinated a technical review of the subject patents to identify those likely essential to the LTE standard and estimated the potential royalty rates that may be achieved through licensing the essential patents under the standards organizations’ Fair Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) licensing policy. CRA also prepared long-term market forecasts for handsets, other wireless devices and wireless infrastructure markets that would require a license to the patents. A financial model was used to estimate annual costs, revenues and net present value from licensing the Debtor’s patents to assist the clients in assessing the potential auction value of Nortel’s patent portfolio.
