The DACH region recognizes district heating systems’ potential to drive the heating transition; despite recent developments, challenges remain in system expansion.
Currently, fossil fuels meet ~60% of heating demand in the DACH region (80% in Germany).1,2,3 District heating systems (DHS), which distribute heat from an external source, are a core component of the energy transition. Their ability to utilize various heat sources and decarbonize by adapting only a few external sources as opposed to numerous interventions at the customer level provides a powerful tool for the decarbonization of heating while offering clients a convenient, future-proof heating system.
