Drake Hernandez’s co-authored study on hydrogen-fired gas turbines continues to gain traction as the hydrogen sector grows. The original study, “Techno-economic analysis of balancing California’s power system on a seasonal basis: Hydrogen vs. lithium-ion batteries,” detailed a methodology to estimate the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of meeting seasonal imbalance on California’s power grid with either hydrogen-fired gas turbines or lithium-ion battery systems.
In the highlights of the study, Mr. Hernandez is quoted saying “Our study’s essential takeaway is that hydrogen-fired power generation can be the more economical option when compared to lithium-ion batteries—even today, when the costs of hydrogen production, transmission, and storage are very high.”
