Defining a long-term transmission strategy for a growing utility

Situation
A transmission and distribution utility experiencing significant load growth sought to define a comprehensive strategy for its transmission business. Rapid growth from data centers, industrial customers, and other large loads was creating substantial new infrastructure needs, while changes in regional transmission planning, interconnection requirements, and regulation were expanding both the opportunities and complexity associated with transmission investment.

Approach
CRA worked with utility leadership to develop a long-term transmission strategy connecting system needs with the company’s broader business and investment objectives. We assessed the utility’s existing transmission position, future load and infrastructure requirements, regional planning dynamics, regulatory considerations, and opportunities for additional transmission investment. CRA helped identify strategic priorities and evaluate where and how the utility could strengthen its role in transmission development, while considering organizational capabilities, planning processes, capital requirements, and execution needs.

Result
The work provided leadership with a clear strategic direction and roadmap for the transmission business, including priority initiatives, investment opportunities, and the capabilities needed to execute them. The strategy helped position the utility to take a more proactive approach to transmission planning and development while supporting rapidly changing customer needs and long-term system growth.
