How utilities can leverage data to create a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion

July 6, 2021

In this TD World article, Jim McMahon, Matthew Thompson, and Quenton Wright focus on the opportunity for utilities to leverage readily available data to support DEI goals.

At 85% white and 80% male (2020 US Bureau of Labor Statistics Survey), utilities represent one of the least diverse industries in the United States. Calls for action from policymakers, shareholders, and communities alike for significant change in this area has driven many US utilities to develop diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals.

Helping to enable the advancement of this is the industry’s transition to becoming more digitized and distributed, which will require significant recruiting and hiring in the coming years. Additionally, with the generally aging workforce of utilities, this may create natural attrition and opportunities for increased diversity.
